What is Copywriting?
And Why It Matters for Your Mission

When I tell people I started a copywriting business, I usually get one of two reactions: enthusiastic support or a polite but confused, “Wait… what exactly is copywriting?”

Honestly, I get it. A few years ago, I didn’t really know what copywriting was either. But once I did, I started seeing it everywhere—and realizing how powerful it is.

If you’re an eco-conscious business owner, a nonprofit leader, or someone trying to grow a mission-driven brand, understanding copywriting (and using it well) can make all the difference. So let’s break it down.

Copywriting 101: What Is It?
Copywriting is, quite simply, writing that sells, persuades, or inspires action. It’s the words on a website that make you want to learn more, the email that convinces you to donate, or the Instagram caption that makes you stop scrolling.

Unlike other types of writing, copywriting has a purpose beyond just informing—it’s about connecting with the right people and encouraging them to take action in a way that feels natural and authentic.

Why Does Copywriting Matter?
When you’re running a small business or nonprofit, every word you put out into the world shapes how people perceive your brand. And in the sustainability space, clear, compelling messaging is even more important. Here’s why:

1. People Need to Get What You Do

If your mission is amazing (which I’m sure it is!) but people don’t immediately understand it, they’ll move on. Good copy helps cut through the noise and explain your work in a way that’s engaging and easy to grasp.

2. Your Audience Wants to Feel Connected

Eco-conscious consumers and donors don’t just want to buy a product or give money—they want to support something they believe in. Strong copy helps create an emotional connection, building trust and loyalty.

3. You Can’t Afford to Blend In

The sustainability space is growing, which is great! But it also means more competition. Your brand needs a clear, unique voice to stand out and avoid sounding like every other “green” company out there.

4. You Need More Than Just Good Intentions

You have an important message to share—but if it’s buried in clunky language or vague statements, people won’t take action. Copywriting ensures that your passion translates into real-world results, whether that’s more sales, more donations, or more engagement.

Why I Started WildWrites:
I launched WildWrites because I saw so many eco-focused brands and nonprofits doing incredible work but struggling to communicate it effectively. Writing has always been my thing, and I realized I could help these organizations clarify their message, connect with their audience, and ultimately, make a bigger impact.

Whether it’s crafting a website, writing grant proposals, or creating social media content, my goal is simple: to make sure your words work for you.
